This is from my old collection of Bootcamp pieces.
Can find no complete listing of Boot Camp versions, which OS X is supported, which Mac model year / identifier.
This link ink is a hodgepodge listing lacking specifics https://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&type=organic&src=support_searchbox_psp&locale=en_US&q=Boot+camp+support+software+by+mac+model
It appears Boot Camp Software update 3.3 is last one to support WXP as the 4.x versions do not mention WXP in articles. Just seems no way to determine.

MacBook Pro Late 2007 17-inch model 3,1 T7700
2.4 ghz core 2 duo, full 64-bit, 64-bit EFI, NVDIA M8600 Graphics, 2 tb SHD, El Capitan
Hard Drive went out under warranty. Replaced. Put fresh install of El Capitan instead of older OS X with Bootcamp support of WXP and upgrade. Now trying to get WXP back on Boot Camp to use old app not supported in W7 or W10.

To install XP you will have to use a virtual machine.
What is the year/model of your Mac (do not post the serial number)?
No you do not have to use virtual machine. You have to have the right boot camp version, the right boot camp support drivers.
WXP would need Bootcamp 2.x or Bootcamp 3.x, which would be on Application DVDs (the Grey disks with the Mac).
Sorry, there is no way I could have assumed you were using a 2007 Mac. If you were using a newer model, this decade or the later part of the previous decade, my response may have been appropriate.
