Apple Intelligence is now available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac!
So last night I installed Sierra, I downloaded the installer from the Mac Page then did the installer everything seemed normal then when it finished nothing has happened? It's taken the disk space said my OS system upgraded but i'm still on Mavericks?
Any idea, maybe a restart? but wouldn't it of done that on it's own?

Did you open it to InstallOS.pkg
Did you open that and get an installation window.
Did it say it would take 13.5MBs of disk space.
Did you know that does not install macOS Sierra
Did you know it creates the Install macOS Sierra.app in your Applications folder.
Did you look in your Applications folder.
Double-clicking on Install macOS Sierra.app will launch the OS installation screen.
Did you know that on completion of the install the Install macOS Sierra.app self deletes.
Did you know you should copy the Install macOS Sierra.app to an external drive
in case you need to reinstall Sierra or install it on another mac.

No it shouldn't, but that doesn't mean it can't happen, that is why you made a full backup of your mac before
you started the installation.
Sierra would have nothing to do with breaking your external drive, if that is what you are thinking.
I take it that you are installing Sierra on your macs internal drive, if so
then you do not need to worry about your external drive.
Just make a copy of the Install macOS Sierra.app on a USB stick or similar.
