Keyboard Setup Assistant: Key to the RIGHT of the LEFT SHIFT key not recognized

What key is is looking for?

Common sense suggests Z is the normal, most common key to right of left shift key.

On a 2020 Insignia keyboard Z to the right of left SHIFT key is NOT recognized.

On Mac Mini 2011, OSX 10.10.2, Yosemite Keyboard Viewer does not exist? If it did, actual function of keys could be seen.

Z is correct for a US (ANSI) keyboard. European (ISO) keyboards have an extra key between Z and left shift. The purpose of the instruction is so the machine knows whether you have a US or European keyboard.

Does your keyboard not work at all? is it USB? Bluetooth? Wireless (with dongle)?

No, the manufacturer image of finding the key to teh right of the left Shift key is bogus or very out of date for machine in teh last several years. This image appears many places online but IS IRRELEVANT.

Only remapping the keys thru the "modifiers" is relevant and currently works. Why the more common(?) term "re-mapping" isn't used is another mystery.

SOLUTION is clearer instructions for Keyboard Modifier than Apple provides. Here it is:

Altering Mappings

You can reinstate your "Control" key as the primary source of keyboard shortcuts using the Modifier Keys menu. To access this menu, click the Apple logo on the toolbar and open "System Preferences." From here, click "Keyboard," then click the "Modifier Keys" button on the following window. To switch the function of your "Command" and "Control" keys, select “Command” from the Control drop-down menu, and “Control” from the Command drop-down menu.

Key Names

In addition to the altered role of the "Command" key, Apple refers to some standard keys by different names. This could cause confusion for users who are not familiar with Apple's terminology. For example, the "Alt" key is usually referred to in OS X circles as the "Option" key. However, it is still fundamentally the same key, with identical locations and functions on both Windows and OS X systems. The same is true for the "Backspace" key, which is known as "Delete" in OS X.

I'm puzzled by the connection between the modifier key remapping feature and your original question about the keyboard setup assistant's request that you press the Z key. What exactly was your original problem and how did remapping a modifier solve it?

Could you provide the url of an example of this? To my knowledge the Keyboard Type button has only ever been used for choosing between US, European, and Japanese type keyboards, and has never had anything to do with modifier keys or windows vs mac layouts.
