I have managed to get it back working as a telephone!

I did the following steps:

  • Back-up phone to computer.
  • Erase without restore
  • Warnings that it wouldn’t restore the iPhone because it needed an update.
  • Sure enough when the iPhone came back to life, it would not restore.

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263

  • On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, open iTunes. If iTunes is already open, close it, then open it again.
  • iPhone 7 : Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons AT THE SAME TIME. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.
  • Told me it was going to recover the iPhone.
  • iPhone 7 came back to life and Vodafone appeared!!
  • With it connected to iTunes it did a Restore as above.
  • It took about an hour to restore. And even longer to download all my apps.

I’m in UK.

iOS 13.5.1 update created "no Service" once installed on my iPhone 7.

“Mobile data update failed. Your iPhone cannot make or receive calls or access mobile data until it has been updated”

The “learn more” suggests how to fix it but connecting it to iTunes and choosing “Command click” just tells me I have the latest version. Crap iOS.

They keep saying it's a hardware issue and since our phones are out of warranty, we should pay to have it fixed. This was obviously caused by the software update. There are too many of us having the exact same problem. Unfortunately, while we wait for Apple to figure out what they did, we are without phone or text service! One person on several of these threads keeps insisting it is hardware. How can all of our phones have hardware issues at the same time after the same update? Our phones say no service too

We tried all those supposed fixes and 2 hours worth of other suggestions by Apple Support. They ended up telling us to send it in for repair at our expense since the phones are out of warranty even though they both worked perfectly prior to the update. It is weird that out of 5 phones, 3 took the update fine, the other too ended up with cellular date failure and no calling or texting. They are currently only good for playing games while connected to wifi. How does Apple get away with passing the problem onto the customer this way?

Ugh - I'm having this problem too.

I've tried all of the suggestions others have done, except Reset All Network Settings and wiping the phone. REALLY don't want to have to do that if not necessary. Maybe Apple will come up with a fix in the next day or so?

My husband says, "It's uncumbent upon Apple to test their updates before releasing them. If they release them, they should work with the carriers to have the issue fixed ASAP."

I am having the exact same issues as above. I have an iPhone 7 which has work excellently through this quarantine period as my work phone with wifi calling. Now after the automatic update last night I can’t receive or make calls. Apple needs to fix this ASAP this will impact many individuals for work and personal use. This should be at their time and cost not us as the consumers.

I have the iPhone 7, too, and had just updated to 13.5.1 last night. I had this problem today. I tried everything people suggested. Finally I had to backup my phone to my computer (or use iCloud if you have the space), erase the phone, then restore from backup.

It worked! Took over 30 mins to restore the phone, but once it did, I have phone capability again and just had to reset a few of my security settings (finger ID, etc.)

*UPDATE - I spoke too soon. :-( I can now make calls, but I still cannot receive them! We use MetroPCS, so not sure if this is in relation to the T-Mobile issues right now or if it is a software issue related to 13.5.1.

Exactly the same issue here. iPhone 8+

Message said update to 13.5.1 to fix security issues blah blah, which I duly did.

When the update completed, I sat there and watched it, now I have no mobile service.

The security issue must have been to stop people making calls or using mobile data on my phone (including me the security update is that tight).

Restarted phone, removed and reinserted SIM card, reset device. All to no avail.

I put the SIM card into my old Galaxy S7 and I’m back in business, so it’s not the SIM card or service provider.

I’m now the proud owner of a $1000 paper weight.

Thanks Apple. :-(

I'm backed up to itunes and ready to proceed but I'm not sure what exactly "erase without restore" means. I don't see a button in itunes or anything in my phone that says that. Do you mean from my iphone, settings>general>reset>erase all content and settings? Then I restore backup from my computer? I'm sorry, I've never had to do anything like this with my phone before. Ever.
