I just want to change the email address that notifications come to and go ahead and keep the apple id with the old email address. The old email is a POP email and isn't coming through on newer devices. Can I do that?

Can I change to a new email address to receive information but still keep the old email address as my Apple ID?

If you create/use a new Apple ID, you will lose access to some of your data and the purchases made with your existing Apple ID. I suggest you change the existing ID to the address you want to use for notifications. That will allow the notifications to come to your desired address and you will retain access to all your data and prior purchases.

No, all you can do is create a new Apple ID.

See How to create a new Apple ID https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204316. See the data implications below.

Keep in mind that some things available under a first Apple ID will not be available under a new Apple ID. For example, you won’t be able to transfer anything purchased from the App and iTunes Stores to the new ID. And, there are other issues to be addressed.

You also can set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them on different devices. See:
