I have recently done a clean install of Catalina and copied FCP X back from a TM backup.
I had a couple of custom made titles when I saved Format and Appearance Attributes but they have disappeared.
They don't seem to be in the Motion Templates folder.
Have they gone for good or are they lurking somewhere else on the hard drive?

Styles aren't in Motion Templates. They're in ~/Library/Application Support/Motion/Library/Text Styles.

Normally when you do a clean install, you wipe the drive, install the OS, and in the installation process migrate the users. When you do that the contents of Motion Templates should come over with it. Check and see what's going on in the Time Machine. Go and look inside the folders.
For some reason the TM backup doesn't open normally so I have physically opened it as though it were a normal set of folders and copied the FCP X app and the Motion Templates folder back onto my Mac.
All my 3rd. party effects are there but when I open the Inspector the only custom title I can see is one I have just made.
