Stereo sound from Apple TV through Paired HomePods

I have recently obtained a second HomePod and created a stereo pair. It plays Music in stereo but when I play through Airplay on Apple TV it only shows each HomePod separately and only allows me to choose one HomePod to play through.

I have a 3rd Generation Apple TV, is that the issue?

I don’t have your ATV model to test but I believe you need a device compatible with Airplay 2

Devices you can AirPlay 2 audio from:

Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD with tvOS 11.4 or later

Devices you can stream to:

HomePod with iOS 11.4 or later

AirPlay system requirements - Apple Support

The 3rd generation Apple Tv has tv os 7.5 and cannot be upgraded further
