If I have an Mac air and it was use by her/him... if I reset to factory setting... will it affect the system of the Mac air? Or should I still register it for the one who bought the Mac???

I know this is crazy! It was given to me a used Mac air and a bit primitive. I'm worried of regarding ownership and registration... if I will reset it to factory settings... can I just register it into my name? So I need the proof of purchase? I'm really worried of those things..
