watch 5 have to activate lte to use with iphone. or still work bluetooth?

Can the watch series 5 be used with iphone thru BT or does it require LTE activation?

Upgrading to series 5 watch, but may not activate watch lte right away. Will the call help features still work over BT as long as phone is near?
