Back-up with broken screen

How do I use Time Machine or perform any back up when I can't see the screen? They are suggesting this do be done before I take it in for repair.

You are not going to be able to do this without being able to view the activity on your screen. If you have an external monitor that you can connect to your MacBook Pro then try that and work viewing the activity on that screen.

If that is not possible then you will just need to send the MacBook Pro in for repair without making any current backups and relying on the backups that you may have made in the past.
