Garageband audio midi sample rate error (with midi controller and audio interface)

While trying to use garageband on my macbook air I have run into an issue. I am using a behringer u-phoria um2 interface and akai pro mpk mini midi controller, and they both work fine on their own, but when I try to create midi tracks from the midi controller and guitar/audio tracks from the interface in the same project, it becomes extremely distorted and eventually an error shows up that says there was an error trying to sync audio and midi. It also shows a sample rate that fluctuates with every time I get the error. I have googled the issue, and since all the solutions that seem to be working for people who aren't using midi controllers do not work for me, I have deduced that the issue is with my midi controller, and that it is coming in conflict with the audio interface. What can I do to solve this issue? (I have looked in the audio/midi setup application and the sample rate is 44,100 Hz for my interface.)

Any help would be much appreciated!
