the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

When I insert certain SD Cards, I get the message which says, 'the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer'. The SD card is brand new and works fine in my digital camera. I've tried repairing and reformatting in Disk Utilities with no luck.

You should really format the SD cards in your camera.

And also if you format the drive after you have taken your photos

you will lose the photos, recovery software may be able to retrieve them.

If you are going to format through Disk Utility you need to format the Disk

not the Volume.

In El Capitan Disk Utility in the left hand panel under external highlight

the Disk not the indented Volume,

give the disk a name

Format: MS-DOS (FAT)

Scheme: Master Boot Record

If you are using a macOS like High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina

in Disk Utility, click on View in the menubar and select

Show All Devices. And then you will be able to select the

Disk rather than the Volume to format.

I am just surprised a SanDisk card is identifying itself as Generic USB SD..., is the card being read from a card reader,

if so that might be the reason.

Have you tried formatting as exFAT.

I used to work in a photo lab and it was always recommended that cards be formatted in camera

as this puts down the file/directory structure for the camera so the camera allocates the correct

space for the images and or movies taken. Never had a problem with properly formatted cards,

often cards not formatted in camera were a problem. Have you checked with your cameras

specifications if it has a maximum capacity of card that it can use.

My other area of concern was that the card was showing its capacity as 1.9MBs.

Could this brand new card be faulty.

Is it definitely a SanDisk card, there are counterfeits around, was it reassuringly expensive.

Often we would get people back from holiday with cards they had bought when away

which were counterfeit or 'bargains', and they had not recorded their holiday photos.

Much disappointment was displayed.

Are you formatting the Generic USB SD (The Disk) and not the 128GB (The Volume).

Have you tried to format in the camera.

Interesting the Sandisk Extreme disks you say you have are showing up as Generic USB SD....,

are they true Sandisk cards, the other thing I see from your screenshot shows on the left

as 128GB, and under that, USB External Physical Volume MS-DOS (FAT12)

and on the right hand side the total disk space is seen as 1.9MBs

Something is very strange there.

I had the same issue recently. For me it happened after I updated to High Sierra OS. Usually you get that error if the drive is formatted for the wrong operating system OR if there is a drive logic error. The most effective way to fix this issue is to reformat the SD card. There are instructions online, I found this link useful -https://iboysoft.com/mac-data-recovery/the-disk-you-inserted-was-not-readable-by-this-computer-high-sierra.html

Is this a fresh drive or an existing drive with data? Reformatting will erase all data stored on the SD card, please back up important files first.

They are Sandisk Extreme Plus 128GB, Sandisk Extreme 64GB and Sandisk Extreme 32GB.

Here are the details.

I have a Sony RX100 III and I'm using the Sandisk Extreme Plus 128GB with it. Once I take the SD card into any of my Macs (10.14.6 and 10.11.6) I get the error message saying, 'the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer'. I then go to Disk Utilities to try and format the sd card but no matter what I do, I can't get the Mac to recognize that it's 128GB and to retrieve the photos I've taken. It also does this with my 64GB sd card but not the 32GB card. The 128GB and 64GB SD cards say uninitialized in Disk Utilities while the 32 GB card says USB External Physical Disk Master Boot Record and it's formatted MOS Dos Fat32. The 32GB sd card seems to work in everything (Sony camera, GoPro, and Mac OS). Is there something special that needs to be done to SD Cards 64GB and larger?

I'm formatting the generic USB SD (disk) and not the 128GB (volume). I named the SD card '128GB'. Yes, I've formatted the SD card in the camera and when I do, it's fine and I can take pictures and videos with no problems. Once I try to get the data from the SD card is when I run into problems. The SD card is also brand new. I just picked it up from Best Buy earlier today.
