Activation Lock fails on my own iPad

My wife purchased an iPad 2 (wifi-only) for me for Father's Day many years ago. It was purchased directly from Apple and came shipped overnight. Over the years as new updates came it seemed to get slower and slower, so I decided to reset/erase it and start over (this was a year or so ago). When I did that, the iPad warned me to turn off the Find My iPad feature first, which I did.

After it was done erasing, the Activation Lock screen came on and wouldn't allow me to use it. I tried everything. I even removed the iPad from the Find My... on my other devices. It's been stuck on the Activation Lock screen ever since.

I have purchased many Apple products over the years and already have a new iPad, but it seems like such a waste to let this go since it is still a good device. Any suggestions on how to salvage this? Or hints that might help me figure it out? I noticed that the line on the Activation Lock screen says "l•••••@icloud.com". Is that just a sample or is that the actual account? My account ID does start with an "l" but it is more than 6 characters (l plus the *****). At one point I changed my account ID to try to figure this out, so I'm not sure if that is what is causing the glitch or not.

That hint is actually the Apple ID you used to set up that device. If it reminds you of the email you used them, that is the Apple ID for that device.

If (hopefully) have the original purchase receipt which shows the iPad serail number on it, you can take it and the iPad to Apple who will help you unlock it. If you don't have the receipt, nor can you figure out the Apple ID, the iPad will remain unusable.

Ok, a little more progress. I figured out that I DID create a separate Apple ID for this iPad (probably to get another free 5GB backup). However, when trying that account it says the Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons. Likely because it is a very simple password. When I try to login to that Apple ID on my Mac, it says it needs to confirm my phone number, which is a number from 8 years ago that I no longer have. The search continues. This is a lot of work for an 8 year old device! :-)

Yes, I agree. It is a lot of work for an iPad, which was released in 2011, nine years ago, is incapable of running iOS higher than 9.3.5 (the current iOS is iPadOS 13.5.1) and most apps, which one might want to run on an iPad, like Netflix, Youtube and host of others can't even be used on such an old out of date device.

You need to ask yourself, if the effort to get back in a device which is that old and out of date is actually worth the effort.

Well, 4 old Apple ID's later, and having to re-buy my old personal email domain name, I finally got it working! However, I certainly don't like the idea that a device I purchased (my wife, rather) requires Apple's permission to activate and use 8 years later. When technology has sufficiently changed and this activation lock server is retired, is Apple going to remove that requirement from the device software? Unlikely.

Just an update on my old iPad 2. This thing is still fantastic for looking at photos. It’s pretty much useless for internet browsing, but shared photo albums work great. We are in the process of building a new house and I’ve been carrying it everywhere with me. Plus, since I no longer feel the need to have it in a bulky case, it’s much slimmer and more convenient to carry out to the job site or in the truck than my new iPad. Thanks for everyone’s suggestions and help!
