Some users have difficulty with TouchID if their fingerprints have poor “ridge detail”, or dry skin. Repeated washing can also remove skin oils that keep the skin supple and recognisable; in some cases, washing can actually cause loss of fingerprint ridge detail.

At the other end of the scale, excessively oily skin - or use of moisturisers or barrier creams - can also interfere with fingerprint recognition.

To cite an example, if I hand-wash or polish a car (something that I do quite regularly), neither my iPhone nor iPad will recognise my registered fingerprints. Both devices then have to be “re-trained”. I find that newer devices, with the second-generation TouchID sensor, to be more tolerant than devices with the first generation sensor.

In summary, you might simply be one of the “less-lucky” when depending upon TouchID sensors. That said, if the issue is confined to a single device (other similar devices being unaffected), then you might reasonably consider the possibility of a fault. The only way to confirm this possibility is to compare with other devices.

I hope this insight is helpful - if only in providing some possibilities of causes to explore.
