Itunes alternatives

Since Apple has changed its policies and methods of purchasing and downloading music, can anyone recommend an alternative that acts more like the old iTunes, and is, perhaps a bit more reasonably priced?

Ben,

Purchasing and downloading music from the iTunes Store works pretty much like it always did. Follow the "buy" section of this document:

Add and download music from Apple Music or buy music from the iTunes Store - Apple Support

You can also check out other download stores such as Amazon Digital Music and Google Play Music. Don't expect the prices to be any different. (Also, like the iTunes Store, they keep trying to nudge you into their respective streaming service.)
