Addng ram to iMac 2017

I have an iMac 18,3 (Retina 5K, 27", 2017) with 16 GB ram (4 x 4GB). I need more ram. I can't find any information about whether I could use 32 GB (2 x 16GB) with 2 of the 4GB cards. That would give me a total of 40GB. If that's possible, what order do I install them? Would I put the two 16GBs in slots 1 & 2, leaving two 4GBs in slots 3 & 4? Or would they go in as 16GB in slot 1, 4GB in slot 2, 16GB in slot 3, & 4GB in slot 4?

When I ordered the 16GBs RAM, the OWC (macsales.com) salesperson said that I should install the 16Gb RAM in either 1 & 3 slots or 2 & 4 with the 4GBs in the others. Wish there was a definitive answer from Apple, but I couldn't find any. Does this make any sense to you?
