safari couldn't support touchpad gesture

Resetting SMC and NVRAM are not "drastic" measures. They are simple procedures that may solve a number of issues, and have no real downside. I doubt that in the present case they are going to help, but they certainly would not hurt.

Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes changes are made to the system(i.e. updates) and then settings (i.e. for the Touchpad) become manipulated, technically. So, reset both on your Mac.

You are far too cavalier about recommending this. These are last resort steps when all else fails.

When that gesture fails, do any of the other methods for going back to the previous page work, for example:

command-left arrow, or

clicking the "<" in the Safari window toolbar?

FWIW, I have no trouble with any of those methods.

Are there any particular circumstances where it is failing for you?
