I accidentally downloaded a spam email attachment on my iPhone SE!

Hey everyone! I was waiting for a confirmation email from Apple to return a product. It just so happened today that I received an "App Store" email first and then an actual email from Apple with return instructions just minutes after. After quickly looking at the first message (which was phishing) I opened the Word document that was attached thinking the document was part of the return. After I realized that what I had opened was an app store phishing email I closed the phishing e-mail and Word doc.

So since the doc opened on my phone, should I be taking any steps as preventative action? I obviously didn't input any information. Any insight would be great. Thank you!

iPhone SE, iOS 13

Hi Duck360198,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that you mistakenly downloaded and opened an attachment from a phishing email your received. I can see why you'd reach out about this; I'd like to help. It's unlikely that opening a Word document would have an affect on your device, however I would suggest deleting the document if you haven't already, then use the steps in the following resource to forward the email to Apple: Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams

You can use this resource in the future to help Identify legitimate emails from the App Store or iTunes Store.

If you have any further concerns, I'd recommend that you refer to this resource: If you think your Apple ID has been compromised

Best Regards.
