Clicking on app in dock does not switch focus to the app

I've had this problem for a few months now and I thought it was related to my external monitor, but it's been happening when I am using my MacBook Pro by itself...

If I'm using an app, clicking on an app that is already opened doesn't switch to that app right away, instead, it deselects the app I'm in (the menu bar still refers to the app but the window gets greyed out as I'm not selecting it anymore). I then click the icon again and it switches to it.

This is what happens most of the times but sometimes the second click won't switch to the app, you then have to manually find the app and use it.

This isn't really a massive problem but I thought it would get fixed in previous updates if it was a bug, which obviously did not happen.

EDIT: This also happens when opening an app through spotlight. It is especially annoying their because I cannot "reclick" it like I do in the dock and it does not even work when I retype the app and hit enter, so I then have to click the dock twice or look for the app.

Has anyone experienced this, and if so, did you find a solution?

It’s definitely not a supposed to be like that so it makes sense that you can’t duplicate it, I’m just trying to see if someone was able to do something to fix it because restarting isn’t even doing it...

You do not state what exact Mac this is or what exact macOS you are currently using.

Is this an old problem, new problem, what changed? This would be a clue as to how to proceed.

For one-off of anomalies like yours, reinstalling the Combo update often sorts problems associated with the delta updates.

ex. Combo update macOS 10.15.5 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2040?locale=en_US

You can download and re-istall this combo on top of your existing macOS 10.15.5—

please advise

I am running macOS Catalina 10.15.5 (19F101) on a 2014 MacBook Air, and cannot duplicate what you state. I launch a mixture of applications from both Spotlight, Applications folder, and my Dock — Inkscape, Sublime Text, Terminal, and Pages 10. A single click on the respective Dock icon will make that running application window active above all others, and keyboard focused, accepting typed input.
