Macbook Pro USB C randomly stop working

Since I bought the Macbook pro I have an issue related with the power supply of the USB.

The laptop have in use 2 USB. One is used for a Hub with power, keyboard and mouse connected. The other one is used by a USB C to HDMI Adaptor.

Sometimes, the keyboard and mouse stop working. It still have power, but don't send nothing. After a while (about 2 minutes), both device lose power and, about 5 second later, start to work again.

The laptop still charging and the screen still working.

If I disconnect the usb before it start working again, sometimes start to work at the moment after connect it again but sometimes it stop working until a reboot. When that happen, if I disconnect also the screen, it won't work after reconnect it.

The issue is not related with the hub, because same happen if I connect the keyboard and mouse directly to the Macbook.

But stop happen if I disconnect the USB - HDMI cable. However, I tried 2 different cables with same result.

I tried also resetting SCM and NVRAM.

The only component that I can't replace is the monitor, an LG 27UD59-B

Hi Daniel,

The problem is very similar to mine and some other users. All with USB hubs and new Macbooks pro. I've the same issue with an Dell monitor and the integrated hub and also stand-alone hubs.

It appears that there is a compatibility issue between certain macbooks and USB hubs. But it has not been officially confirmed. It is also possible that we have a Macbook with a manufacturing defect. I think it is also wise to leave a case on via telephone contact with Apple support.

I think this is 100% like the problem you are describing

Thanks for the answer.

  1. No, if I don't use the screen, I don't have any problem.
  2. I'm using the official charger for MBP 13", but also I tried with the 15" charger (my MBP is 13"), same result. I also tried connecting the usb power cable directly to the MBP avoiding limitation from usb hub. Same result.
  3. I can't see nothing related with the USB in energy options, but I've disable the power nap, just in case.

Does the problem arise if you disconnect the monitor cable from the USB-C port? How much wattage is the power adapter you are using with the hub?

The disconnect problem is sometimes caused by a larger power draw from all peripherals (like a hub and what is connected to it) than the power adapter can handle. Also, check your settings in Energy Saver preferences. Problems may arise if you enable Power Nap and options that shut down anything when the computer is idle.
