Contacts backup

Do I need to click that my contacts are synced with iCloud if my contacts are all from Gmail contacts? They are all in my contacts book on my iPhone and I can make a change on my iPhone contacts info and it appears on my iPad and gmail contacts server. Is it smart to also back up in iCloud or will I get duplicates? (I have a lot of contacts!)
