Macbook pro will not unlock with apple watch

My macbook pro used to unlock with my apple watch, but since the last macos update, this feature is gone and I can't figure out how to get it back. The dialogue box in system preferences, security, general just doesn't exist anymore for me to reenable. What do I do to get it back?

  • Make sure both the Apple Watch and the Mac are using the same Apple ID.
  • Make sure your Apple ID account has 2-Factor Authentication enabled.
  • Make sure your Mac has Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Make doubly sure both the Apple Watch and the Mac are on the same WiFi network (I had problems when my Mac was at work on Ethernet, and my Apple Watch was not on the corporate network; I did not get Apple Watch unlock access until I took my Mac home from work during the quarantine and they were both on the same home WiFi network)
  • Make doubly sure your Apple Watch is on the same WiFi network. You can check this via Apple Watch -> Settings -> Wi-Fi. If they are not, you can scroll down and use "Choose Network".
  • Make sure your Mac supports Apple Watch unlock (a Mac mid-2013 or later, with macOS Sierra, for Apple Watch Series 1 and 2, or macOS High Sierra or later for Apple Watch Series 3, 4 or 5).

PS. Every once in awhile I have to manually enter my Mac password, and then the next time the Apple Watch will unlock it.

If you have a Mac with a finger printer reader, do not use it, but rather type in your password. I have a Mac with a finger print reader, and I only get back my unlock with Apple Watch if I enter my password, and not use the finger print reader.
