iPod Incompatibility with MacOS Catalina (Shuffle Gen.1)
Hello! I have a 1st Generation iPod Shuffle (512mb) and am having significant problems syncing and managing songs on/to the device with MacOS Catalina.
It displays in both 'Finder' and 'Apple Music' with no issues, and I am able to upload music fine by simply dragging my local music (in all relevant compressed formats) to the iPod in Finder. And once I eject, the iPod plays the tracks perfectly fine on the device as expected.
The problems I am experiencing arise in just about everything other than that.
The problems and errors I have are:
-Inability to view (or delete) any music files from the device; I am simply left with a blank screen on the 'Manage Storage' views on both 'Apple Music' and 'Finder'. It is as if there are no songs on the device. However the storage indicator at the bottom says there are (eg. 254mb) of Audio stored. In practicality, once I add the songs they are permanently on the device, with no way of viewing or deleting them using the UI in either Finder or Apple Music. How I personally go about this hurdle, to replace or delete songs, is by doing a complete factory reset of the iPod through the 'Restore iPod...' button in Finder. Which coincidentally usually contains error messages of its own, and only actually completes the reset after about 4 attempts. I am usually left with a pop up message telling me the iPod had an issue with being restored.
-UI glitches: tiny black bars/pattern in the iPod Finder window, also when the iPod is plugged in it is seen as both an iPod and a USB drive in the side menu. The USB drive is a blank screen when you click on it, but after a few seconds it disappears, and I am left with just the one 'iPod' in the side bar. This is with and without the 'Enable disk use' box being ticked.
Some other notes:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5. 8gb RAM.
I am running the current, as of this post, version of MacOS Catalina; 10.15.5. My iPod Shuffle is also up to date on 1.1.5. I have tried 3 seperate USBC-A dongles with this iPod.
I have tried many methods to 'fix' this issue; including pressing just about every button on the one working Finder window.
I have restarted both devices, several times.
I have seen some people on these discussion forums, having relevant issues with different iPod devices such as iPod Classic, but I am wondering if anybody has any insight into my issues specifically or the older iPod shuffles.
I am also confident my device is in full normal functionality with no issues to the battery health, sound quality or buttons.
I am fairly confident that this is an issue with Mac OS Catalina, and its faulty iPod support. I understand that my iPod is nearly ancient technology at this point, but after reading and researching about the continued support promised for iPod in Catalina, I figured it safe to make the upgrade.
I had been waiting to make a post or contact Apple directly, hoping it'd be fixed as there were many initial bugs with Catalina. However it has been 6 months and no changes or fix.
I understand its age at this point, and would be completely satisfied if Apple had simply stated they would be discontinuing support for the iPod altogether (as they have for 32bit software). However this seemingly hasty software attempt for continued support of iPod they've made, is simply not functioning, useable or anything of what I'd expect from Apple.
Any help from Apple staff, or from anyone on the forum who has similar issues or knowledge on the subject, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
