Plugging in a mic in the headphone port for MacBookPro 2017

I'm trying to plug in a standard mic (directional Sennheiser mic) into a MacBookPro 2017. I'm plugging it into the headphone port, which always used to work for my old MacBookPro (I think I bought it in 2011).

When I plug in my headphone now, it doesn't register as a mic. I've been told a 3.5mm 4 pin to 2x3 pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter might work? Is that correct?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

No. Your older MBP had a combination audio in / out port. Newer ones don't. You need to use a USB device or adapter for your mic.
