How to watch movies in PC iTunes library, via iPhone while traveling?
Hello,
I've had much un-luck with what I am trying to accomplish recently. I have a Qnap NAS at home, with movie library stored in it. It can host Plex, but I've had major trouble with it with access outside my network, something with my ISP and dynamic addressing. Last night I tried two alternatives, one was the Qnap solution called Qmedia. This is less than pathetic as you cannot fast forward, rewind, or skip to the next scene, on any movie.
So I went the route of setting up my iTunes library on Windows, added the directory where the movies are stored to my library as another folder (without copying the media to my iTunes library). Then enabled the home sharing. On my Apple TV, this is working great...except the fact that Apple restricts down to only "their" preferred extensions (file types such as .mkv cannot be viewed). This is rather limiting as I am not going to convert things to what Apple deems is 'good' but prefer to keep my movies in a better compression method that Apple does not think is 'good'. Therefore this option may not be the right solution. If I can get it to do this last step (remote access) perhaps it will be the solution I go with, knowing I'll have to start converting all hundreds of my movies to an "apple format". Blah.
So far, I can access the iTunes library of movies, from my Apple TV at home on the same network, with the same Apple ID. On my iPhone, cannot find a way to do this. Specifically, remotely while traveling. If this is not possible with iTunes, that's really the only question as I will not go this route as it is not a solution. On the Apple TV you open a pre-installed app called "Computer" and locate the library in there. On the iPhone I find no such app.
Is there a way to view your movies while traveling, which are stored in your iTunes library on a Windows computer at home?
Typical setup - no static IP, no dym service currently, no domain name. I do have Apple Music subscription and was reading about iTunes Match...but appears to only work for music and not movies.
Thank you!
