Activating iPod 2nd gen on Catalina

I have an iPod 2nd which I was able to charge and get inside using the 4 digit passcode. Then I erased and reset the device as I don't recall the older iTunes account credentials and I wanted to check if I could download a older version of the Spotify app. After reset I connected the iPod to Mac running Catalina and since last 30 mins, in the finder app it just shows 'Activating...'. Anyone knows how to activate the device since iTunes is now gone? I want to use the device to play my docking speaker which has a old 30 pin adapter. I have been using the iPod occasionally before and it was in fine shape.

After several reboots, the device finally got activated...as expected Spotify did not install. I got interest with using my awesome docking speaker (which has an inbuilt audiophile quality DAC) with the iPod after reading this post

Unfortunately I am on Mac OS Catalina 10.5.5 which does not have iTunes to try out the method. I need to now find a friend who has older version of Mac (with iTunes) or try Windows to see if the above works. Will keep you posted.
