safari not working
thank you in advance for any help: Mac Book Pro. default browser is set to safari (there are no other choices) yet no search will use safari, everything happens in Google.

Thank you for your suggestion: following the advice on the information you suggested tells me to select “safari” in smart search. I cannot. Safari isn’t there. There is google, yahoo, bing and DuckDuckGo.
Safari doesn't have its own search engine. It uses Google, DuckDuckGo, yahoo or bing. You must choose which search engine to use with Safari.
To change Safari's Search preferences read Customize searching in Safari on Mac - Apple Support.
