Backing up 2 macbook air laptops to 1 external drive

Am I able to back up 2 laptops using time machine to 1 external drive? Will it mess up any info from the previous backups? If this is possible all i need to do is just plug in the external drive and run time machine correct? Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, OS X 10.11

If you are using TimeMachine there’s no problem - as long as your hard drive is large enough. We recommend a TM drive size that’s 2-3 times as large as the backup source. IOW, if your computer has 400GB of stuff on it you’d want a backup between 800GB to 1.2TB large. In your case you’d need to look at BOTH computers and do the math. TM will create a folder named for each computer on the backup drive to keep them separate. If you are using a different backup program, dunno.
