In gmail accounts with latest version of Mac the settings are done automatically and there is no need to enter them manually , if you try to enter forcefully they won't be accepted and account will not be configured properly .

I can use my work email via Mac mail app and log into iCloud via browser to read and send email. I tried reloading Catalina today.

I don't seem able to send email via mail app when using my iCloud account. I have tried deleting, restarting and then adding it back in.

I am using host name: smtp.mail.me.com and smtp.icloud.mail.com

I have tried selecting and deselecting "automatically manage connection settings". I have tried setting it to port 25, 587, and 465 with Use TLS/SSL selected and not selected. I have also tried changing authentication

To sync mail application always a third party mail service is used with icloud .

Create a mail account with gmail services https://support.google.com/mail/answer/56256?hl=en

And make sure the mail address and password is kept same as Apple ID and password and signed in system preferences > iCloud .

See the article to turn on iCloud features https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207689

Read https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlcfdfc3a5/mac

Also if mail data is full in iCloud.com the mails will not be received in iCloud.com and also in configured apple mail application see the article https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/if-your-icloud-mailbox-is-full-mm6b1a5aee/icloud

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/icloud/mm6b1a3b04/icloud

The connection doctor show green dots as port settings were done correctly .
