ATMOS is not detected by my Apple TV 4K

Hi Everyone.

My Apple TV is not detecting that my Receiver supports ATMOS. In other words, there is no ATMOS under immersive audio. When I connect the Apple TV to another A/V system, I see ATMOS under Immersive Audio.

When I play a movie with ATMOS support, I get multichannel PCM on my receivers. My receiver plays UHD 4K Blu-rays with ATMOS just fine.

I have a Pioneer SC-89 receiver. I have tried 2 configurations. 1) Via SONY A8G Oled TV via ARC to my Pioneer, and 2) directly to my receiver. Since the Receiver does not support HDCP 2.2, I have a adapter that converts the HDCP 2.2 to HDCP 1.4. Apple TV then sends 4K SDR. In both cases, Atmos is not detected.

When I connect the Apple TV to my LG B7 Oled TV, Atmos support is detected (shows up under Immersive Audio).

Please advise. Thanks.

1) Via SONY A8G Oled TV via ARC to my Pioneer

Play audio in Dolby Atmos or surround sound on your Apple TV - Apple Support

  • “Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections.”

2) directly to my receiver.

Normally, “directly to receiver” would be the setup for use with Atmos.

  • “You can't play sound in Dolby Atmos if Quick Start is turned off in Settings. To check, go to Settings﹥Apps﹥iTunes Movies and TV Shows﹥Quick Start.”

For Atmos support from the Apple TV 4K, your receiver should decode PCM Multichannel with Dolby Atmos (MAT), as that is what the Apple TV output sends. Verify with the receiver manufacturer if Dolby MAT is supported, or possibly firmware dependent.

Since the Receiver does not support HDCP 2.2, I have a adapter that converts the HDCP 2.2 to HDCP 1.4. Apple TV then sends 4K SDR.

Apple TV will not fetch the 4K movie title with Atmos, for HDMI with HDCP 1.x. You will need true HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 to get the good version. Apple TV limits what it will do, based on what capabilities it can detect.
