MB Pro backed up to external drive permission

I have a MB pro running Catalina which I somtimes back up to an external drive connected to a High Sierra imac (unplug it from the imac and connect to MB Pro) other than an external drive dedicated to the MB Pro.

I use this as a secondary backup.

While mounting the imac drives from the high sierra mac, i noted that I have no permissions in the user folder despite checking on ignore ownership of this volume

On a copied Users folder volume (users by itself) I don't have permission to applications, movies and downloads

Thoughts on a fix?

Hi,

If these are user folders from a different user, then this is expected behaviour.

When the external shared drive is connected to the MB PRO all permissions are ok

When the external drive is connected to the High Sierra mac, the permission go awry...perhaps something to do with viewing another mac's content on a partitioned drive where volumes from both computers reside?
