Are zip archives backwards compatible?

If I open a zip created in High Sierra, will I be able to open it on a much older system?

I have an external drive where I'm storing a bunch of very old apps, and I thought I'd zip them up to save space. But I'm wondering if I'll be able to unzip those archives on old Macs running OS 10.4, OS 8.1, and OS 7.1.
