Restore Time Machine backup to a new Macbook Air

I've done it many times in the past, but I wanted to be certain: I'm thinking of getting a new Macbook Air and I'd like to restore from a full time machine backup of my old Macbook Pro that was running EL Capitan (this mac is 13 years old! El Capitan is as far as it can go). Can the new Macbook Air support it? From there I would upgrade to High Sierra becuase it's as far as I can go with Ableton Live 9. ANy advice is appreciated.

No. You may not run a macOS version that predates the version included with a new Mac. Attempting to restore a TM backup of your older MBP won't work, but you can migrate its contents to the new MBA as has always been the case.

Use the Mac operating system that came with your Mac, or a compatible newer version

You can still use the TM backup to migrate though. If your software is as old as the operating system I’d not bother migrating applications but you can certainly migrate your data. Migrating old software won’t hurt mind, but it would be a waste of time.

BTW, since the new MBAir doesn’t have the old fashioned USB ports you’ll need to get a dongle. I bought a pack of USB C to USB 2 dongles for my desktop. For my wife’s new MBP I got her a multi-use dongle from OWC. It has a USB 2 port, an HDMI port for external display, a flash card port and it can also charge the computer. A nice piece of kit for about $55
