Apple Watch Disappointment

It was my 18th birthday roughly 6 months ago. My whole family, alongside many of their friends decided to all pitch in and surprise me with a new Series 5 Apple Watch as a gift. I was ecstatic when I received this gift as it was the first time in my life where I got something so valuable and personalized. I remember seeing the awesome advertisements on TV about this new watch that was said to be “evolutionary.” After seeing those ads, I knew this watch was something that I wanted because I play volleyball, surf, swim, ski, run, and work out, so generally I am a very active person. This watch was supposed to be in my life for more than just 6 months. It was supposed to help me stay active through my first years in University this fall. I wear it probably around 22 hours of each day and take it off just to charge. My habit of wearing it every day for most of my activities was a positive thing I thought, until I went to Sunshine Coast this past week.

I stayed at a lake there and had my watch on when I was swimming. To get into the lake, you just have to jump off of the dock. After I jumped into the water, I lifted my arms up to start swimming and immediately noticed that my watch was gone. I could not believe my eyes. I was wearing it with an Apple sports watch strap and I still do not understand how it unclipped off of my wrist. Realizing that the watch is at the bottom of the lake, I started to cry. I blamed myself for choosing a wrong time to wear it. I thought that I did something wrong. Thinking back to that day now, I realized that I did not do anything out of the ordinary while wearing my watch. I had full trust in Apple and its promise about this watch and wore it during my morning swim in the lake, nothing more.

The watch was purchased alongside AppleCare+, but so far, I have not received any help on this issue, nor I do not know if it would even be of help. I could not even find an email where to send this message of disappointment to. I was wondering if there is anything that Apple can do to compensate this loss?

Sincerely,

Kseniya

Hello, I have contacted Apple Support as per your recommendation and they confirmed that Apple Care+ will not provide any compensation in these circumstances. I do understand that they are limited by the conditions of their policy, but it is not helping me with getting over the disappointment I am experiencing. So, I am reaching out again to see what Apple is willing to do to support the image of the Apple Watch that is advertised. As I have said before, the commercials had convinced me that the watch would stay on my wrist if I went swimming. If this was not heavily advertised, I would have taken more precaution and would have taken it off for swimming of any kind. I hope that Apple can come up with a way to help me recuperate from my loss.

There is no theft or loss coverage for the Apple Watch. Unfortunately watch bands can come off when jumping into water, lost a Timex that way when I was 15. I wear the sport loop on mine if going into water because I had had the single pin come off while just wearing it and moving my arm, it is my least favorite watch band and I haven't worn one in quite a while.

If there is someone you can call at the Lake who has a face mask and snorkel they can probably locate the watch on the bottom and send it to you. Your AppleCare + would cover would cover water damage with one of your 2 accidental damage incidents, you would pay your deductible and get it replaced.
