External monitor not working macbook pro

Hi guys! Looking for some help with an external monitor issue.

I have a 13" 2018 MacBook pro, all up-to-date, and I've been having persistant issues in getting my second monitor to work with my laptop. I'm trying to connect it to a ASUS VP28UQGL 4K Ultra HD 28" TN LCD monitor with a HDMI>USBC adaptor, but whenever I do it keeps randomly blinking off. It's like the whole thing thinks it becomes disconnected, reboots (while my MacBook also readjusts its layout) and then starts again. The screen works fine with other devices so I'm a little stuck!

Apple adapter or third-party?

it sounds like your adapter is not capable enough for a "4K" display.
