Open Water Swim Inaccuracies

My Apple Watch has become inaccurate when tracking an open water swim. I do the same swim on 3 different days and get 3 different distances. It is about 1 mile. One day I get 1 mile. The next 6 miles. The next 3 miles. This just started. Tracking Outdoor walks is fine. My wife and I went for a walk this morning and we got exactly the same distance. I am training for an open water race and my times and splits are important To me during training. Can you help?

Hi Michael,

We see that you're experiencing inconsistent results when using the Open Water workout on your Apple Watch. We know it's important for this data to be accurate; we'd like to help. We'd recommend reviewing these resources and information first:

"Get better results

  • Your Apple Watch estimates your measurements during workouts based on the information that you entered during setup. Here's how each workout is measured:

    • Open Water Swim: GPS will only provide distance when you do a freestyle stroke. Water might prevent a heart-rate measurement, but calories will still be tracked using the built-in accelerometer."

Swim with your Apple Watch

If you continue to have trouble I'd also suggest restarting both your Apple Watch and iPhone.

Let us know what you find.

Best Regards.
