How to stop apps from running in the back ground when not in use?
Why do you want to do that? Opening and closing apps frequently consumes battery.

In Battery, showing battery usage, the app ESPN, shows "1m on screen-3H 37M background". The app StocksTracker, shows "19 min on screen - 4H 16min background".
Is there a way to stop them from running in the background to save battery usage?
Go to Setting>General>Background App Refresh.
and toggle off the button
