my mac is saying I have no more space on my computer and asking to store photos on my icloud before I can download more files on my computer

I have a 2 TB plan and still 1.5TB on my icloud. I'm trying to download a 80GB file on my computer from a flash drive but my computer says i don't have enough space on my hard disc and that if I want to free up some space i need to allow my photos to be placed on the cloud. My question is why do i need to do this ?

80 GB file ?

What types of files can I store in iCloud Drive?

You can store any type of file in iCloud Drive, as long as it's 50GB or less in size and you don't exceed your iCloud storage limit. That means you can keep all of your work documents, school projects, presentations, and more up to date across all of your devices. iCloud storage is not the same as storage on your hard disk. If you want to know how much storage is left on your hard disc, go to Finder, right click on it and then left click on Get info.

If your HD is getting out of free space, you could either delete files you don't need anymore, move files to an external disk or optimize storage by using iCloud. How large is your photo library? (Go to Finder, Images, Photo Library: right click on it and then left-click on Get info)
