Magic Keypad for iPad Pro 2020 Bluetooth capability

Hello, I understand the magic keypad only supports a landscape orientation as far as the charging stand is concerned. However, a few applications refuse to flip to a horizontal view. If I look at my iPad vertically is there a way that my keypad could connect via Bluetooth or would I have to purchase a separate Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to use my iPad Pro 4th gen with a (separate) vertical stand?

My hopes in asking is that I would be able to utilize the wonderfully accurate trackpad and keyboard together even though my iPad may be on another stand, tripod, etc.

I feel, if not already offered, it would be extremely useful if Apple were to offer a Bluetooth compatibility of some sort while disconnected from the iPad- for those of us who have the newly released version maybe Apple could create a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the lightning port on the keypad case?

As shown in the diagram above, if the keypad needed constant power without iPad attached, the Bluetooth abilities could be in an adapter that on one end, plugs to usbc port & on other end has an open usbc port to connect the charger as usual. Like a tiny Bluetooth extension cord.

Furthermore, many keep their old macs that are no longer compatible with airdrop. (I am talking OLD like 2007-2011) and if you do happen to take up this little BT extension maybe you could make something similar (since many of us already have a usbcIN to Lighting adapter ) that, while not in use for MKPad 2020 could be plugged in as an adapter in an old model Mac to allow airdrop *\o/* we would be so happpppy! Haha anyway I’m sure the idea needs Quite a bit of tweaking but this is not yet an area in which I specialize...so in the meantime:

Can I connect Magic Keyboard with trackpad 2020 case for iPad Pro 12.9 4Gen via Bluetooth while in vertical orientation or while using tripod/stand etc?

Won't work. You have to have a direct Smart Connector to iPad communication between the iPad and Magic Keyboard. The concept isn't all bad, but there is no current way to do what you're suggesting.

You can however, provide feedback to Apple via this link --> Feedback - iPad - Apple

You're welcome. While I absolutely LOVE my Magic Keyboard and I haven't come across any apps which I would need to use my keyboard in portrait mode, I would say that perhaps the Magic Keyboard may not be the perfect device for your needs?

Perhaps an alternative since you said you want the famously smooth and precise track pad from the Magic Keybaord, would have been a Bluetooth Keyboard and a Magic Track Pad 2. The Magic Track Pad 2 operates exactly like the Track Pad on the Magic Keyboard and is actually much larger with more room to slide around. Just a though......

BTW, one thing I did, which you might want to consider is get an inexpensive folio magnetic case for your iPad Pro for those times you want to remove the iPad from the Magic Keyboard and use your Apple Pencil.

This has worked extremely well for me and costs a fraction of the Apple Folio and is in my opinion, just as nice:

Thank you, I know it does not currently work in portrait mode with the magic keyboard with touchpad 2020 release, I was wondering if anyone knew how to connect them remotely more than anything. (I’m still wondering if anyone knows :D) I did try connection via USB-C cable and could not find any other options in searches nor on my own.

Would you know where to find this information aside from the guide on Apple.com?

What if I connected magnets like the QI magnetic car chargers, one on each end of a corded connection? It would not technically be remote (lol) but it would allow for distance and the ipad could still provide power I think, I’m just not quite sure how to do it/whether worth the time.

Another option I was considering would be to avoid my (possibly made up) extension cord route and try wireless by providing a power source. To do this, I think I may be able to do it similarly but I would have to figure out what could power the keyboard - I am assuming by placing it on the magnetic adapter portion, making rather precise cutouts for the 3 adapter points to meet my (again possibly made up) wireless power item & then connect the bluetooth USB adapter in / connect it somehow to the battery source...which of course seems to need some sort of processor to work...hopefully this makes some kind of sense haha I’m rather right brained and this is not something with which I’m particularly familiar.

Is there another part you may be aware of in the connection?

Any recommendations, really, would probably be helpful XD

& Thank you - yes this is my goal lol.

I plan to keep posts up to date if I do find a way!

Otherwise if anyone else finds one I’m super happy to try it as long as it is an external solution of course.

I love the iPad Pro 12.9 + magic keyboard as well! I wouldn’t replace it with anything. I just hate “texting” haha thank GOD there is voice to text but even editing I prefer an actual keyboard above on screen. Plus I am fairly new to iOS so the traditional keyboard (I’ve used in the past with the lamp looking mac) is nice with only one change in the cmd/control swapped vs. ctrl/alt. Although now that swype has been added I do love the floating keyboard option as well for iPad. I have only used the aforementioned older iMac for a short time, switched to an iPhone in 2018 (yay!) and loved it so much I decided to invest in iPad as a “new laptop” instead of legitimately replacing my laptop (HP) once Apple had switched over to their own processors so mine would not become too quickly outdated...hopefully! The magic kb was honestly a surprise, I logged in the first day of the release and purchased it and the pencil prior to the iPad so I’d have a case upon arrival.

The reason I prefer some remote access is purely personal preference. I am a fast typist who has little patience, though I hope to gain more lol, for use of an onscreen keyboard and cursor. I do most of my work, studies and text edits on the magic kb setup and typically browse/spend freetime this way as well. However, I chose iPad Pro for its accuracy in drawing a circle precisely as I largely hold an interest in design.

As for portrait view, a few apps I commonly use have not yet come out with an actual iPad OS app, instead they use the iPhone format and refuse to turn / rotate screen orientation. For these few apps, I would like to use a physical keyboard to browse, navigate, and type.

I figured I would be better off coming up with a way to extend that connection since it is not already formatted to portrait in case I wanted to remotely utilize the keypad. An example of needing portrait or remote view of any kind, though I’m sure there are more, would be video creation of online tutorials for processes that incorporate a lot of typing.

I think the best alternative for me would be to purchase a Mac Mini, full numeric Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse; later a trackpad; and finally to complete the “main” setup would be a customized iMac Pro. The ability to carry the iMac Mini and iPad would give me a quick fix for a portable desktop if ever needed once iMac Pro mini SuperComp was obtained which only ads value to the rather cost effective price of the mini.

Now that Apple has chosen to include ARM processors, I am even more apt to purchase Apple before PC simply due to the likelihood of innovation that outlasts that of the PC programs available. Added security is also a major consideration but Apple is already well known for this... BUT the absolute best part is seeing Apple put in fabless ARM processors because it can potentially make streamlining a permanent reality over all products & possibly ensure new iMac/Macbooks are given a lifespan even longer than the already long decade life expectancy given today for past models. (Since, hopefully Apple would allow all processors to either be upgradeable to a longer point or all OS to be compatible with processors over 10yrs of age if able)

I first purchased iPhone +Apple Watch, then in the airpod Pro (as I did not like how far the bottom of the earpiece hung on the first two I said I would get them if they ever shortened the Airpods...and they did lol) They all worked way better than I ever expected as I thought it was more fan-based enthusiasm than anything. The seamless ability to streamline between devices was and is invaluable.

Recently, I decided to invest in iPad for studies and it has proven to be the best tool in both work and school with the Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil.

I never thought the iMac vs PC debate teams lol were correct in stating that Mac is too expensive or luxurious...it’s a sellers choice and honestly, I’ve never been anything but happily surprised with the quality received of even outdated Macs. Now, using new items, I can say my previous notion in believing that some qualities were over-exaggerated by major fans are incorrect.

Though I’m rather impartial, I don’t see myself choosing PC over a Mac unless it is to program something available to an open source market...in that case I would set my work/studies/personal endeavors around my main tech & its more secure base + choose a PC like a fun “add on” or accessory allowing me to utilize whatever Android/Google OS/Linux/Windows system I needed.

TLDR-Agreed :) + a Mac Mini

If you don’t mind since I’m new, do you have any recommended apps to best utilize iPad Pro?

I have Adobe, all apps; PicsArt; M+ & Moleskine; and Quickbooks as far as design, business & logging goes if this helps and you know of any you prefer over these or similar to them.

I am also open to others unmentioned XD I basically downloaded what it said to when I first opened Apps and it asked, “New to iPad?” haha. (I do also have Microsoft Office 365 so the MS Ofc. apps are here too)

I can open this in a thread of its own but since it’s personal preference rather than fact based I don’t know whether I should and you seem to have quite a bit of exp/

Absolutely! Thank you so much again for your help :D and replies!

I downloaded Procreate, from the reviews it actually looks like this app resolves some of what I need to currently transfer to my laptop (HP so no airdrop :( otherwise no prob lol) and will allow me to do most everything design wise from the iPad! Has great reviews and I plan to look through the Pro Apple Apps as well, I just haven’t gotten over there yet :)
