2020 MacBook Air Fans ALWAYS on with high CPU

Hi Guys,

I have purchased a MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020) for work. Spec is as follows:

  • macOS Catalina (up to date), version 10.15.5
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
  • 1.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
  • 8 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB

The problem I am having is I cannot get the fans to switch off? They are always constantly on and create a lot of noise. Is there anything that can be done to stop the fans? This isn't normal as my previous two MacBook Pro's have never done this.

I use the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office applications.

Read About fans and fan noise in your Apple product.

Excerpt:

"If the fans in your Mac run fast even when it isn't experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated, you might need to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac."

You identified the culprit: "Microsoft Teams" and its various "helpers" are monopolizing that Mac's resources to the point it can do little else. It's not surprising either, since Microsoft has never been known to write efficient code.

I cannot find anyway to reduce this.

Why would you want to do that? The program is doing whatever it is it's designed to do. As far as Microsoft is concerned it is the most important task on your Mac. It doesn't care what else is going on—fans heat battery drain etc are immaterial to its purpose. The only way to reduce its demand is not to use it. Uninstall it in accordance with its instructions and find a functional equivalent.
