LG UltraFine 5K monitor 27" webcam choppy working with new MacBook Pro 13" 2020

Hi,

I have two LG UltraFine 5K monitors 27". The integrated webcam in both LG 5K monitors was working as expected (smooth) with MacBook Pros from 2018 and 2019. When connecting a MacBook Pro 2020 to the LG 5K monitors integrated webcam is choppy and freezes constantly.

We have tested the two LG 5K monitors, with 3 different MacBook Pros, from 2019 and two 2020. We can confirm that the issue only happens with the MacBook Pro 2020. We have also tested with FaceTime, Zoom, and Skype and the same issue appears in all apps, so it is not an app issue. The MacBook Pro 2020 webcam works fine with the apps.

There is an issue with the new MacBook Pro 2020 and the integrated webcam in the LG 5K monitors. Does any one have similar configuration and can confirm the problem? Does any one has a work around?

Thank you,

Aldo

I've had multiple second-level chats with Apple Support (I have sent them data via the Capture Data app) and they have stated that the case is known, and they are working on a fix. What's interesting is that they said they have evidence that it is also an issue with the MBP M1's too. Odd right?

It's also more than just webcam performance (stutter, freezing, choppy video, audio) problems. When the MBP Intel is tethered to the LG 5K during Zoom calls, and I am presenting/screensharing from the LG, even when using the webcam on the MBP (and not the LG) poor audio and video streaming occurs on the Zoom (irrespective of the webcam video).

I can't use my LG any longer for Zoom calls that I need to present on (and of course you don't always know when you need to screenshare), I just use the MBP Intel freestanding, which is frustrating, unproductive/disruptive (disconnecting the devices multiple times a day), and not why I purchased the LG 3 years ago.

Hopefully a fix is in the works and will come soon.

Hi,

I am sorry, but you misunderstood my post. The issue is not with the LG UltraFine 5K monitor webcam, but with the line of MacBook Pro 13" released in 2020. As I explained in my post, earlier MacBooks do not have a problem with the webcam, but the MacBook Pro 2020 have the issue with the LG 5K webcam. We have tested the issue with several MacBooks and also three LG 5K monitors.

In other words, the LG 5K webcam is fine. There seems to be a compatibility issue with the LG 5K monitor webcam, which Apple sell in its store. The LG 5K monitor was purchased from the Apple Store.

What Apple needs to do, it is to have a MacBook 13" 2020, plug it to an LG 5K monitor, open FaceTime or Zoom, and see the issue themselves, where the video is choppy. It is this simple.

I have the same problem with a brand new UltraFine 5K Monitor (2020) and brand MacBook Air 13" (2020) running Catalina 10.15.6

I spent extra money on this screen to get the integrated camera/mic/speakers (rather than using an external webcam, etc) and so I really do hope this is a software fix...

Anyway, just confirming another person with the same problem here...

I'm having the exact same issue. For the past 4 years, I ran a 13" 2016 Macbook Pro and connected it to my LG Ultrafine 27" 5k monitor. The webcam worked perfectly. Exactly same frame rate on both my Macbook webcam as the external monitor's webcam.

Last week, I upgraded to the 2020 Macbook, and the Macbook's webcam works fine. However, the LG Ultrafine's webcam is now essentially unusable. It's incredibly choppy.

Would really like to prioritize a fix for this. I spent a lot of money on this monitor, recommended by Apple, and I shouldn't have to buy an external webcam to make this work like it used to.

I've got the same problem. Upgraded from a 2016 13" MBP to a 2020 13"MBP and the problem started. Worked perfect with the 2016 model. Seems to be a driver issue that needs to be resolved for the new model. I upgraded to Big Sur on both the 2016 and 2020 MBP but the issue remains with the 2020 model. Hope they get this fixed once Big Sur is released to the public because this is really poor for video conferencing.

I just upgraded from a 2016 MBP 15" to a 2020 MBP 13" and am having the exact same issue. This is deeply frustrating. I have the LG 5k display, and if I use the built in webcam on a Zoom, FaceTime or any other video chat, my video is super choppy and will occasionally freeze. I do not want to buy an external webcam. It is crazy to me that a laptop that is 4 years newer would have this problem. You shouldn't need a dedicated GPU for smooth webcam video.

I'm using 10.5.6.

I too started this year with a new MacBook Pro 2020 and just recently got a brand new LG 5K monitor so I could finally have a good work space setup but - the only time I got the LG camera to even start was with Photo Booth, one pic taken and then it froze never to start again. For all applications it basically says "camera is starting" and the camera view is completely black. The green light is turned on though, indicating the camera is on.

I tried turning it off and on again, changing USB outlet, installed latest Big Sur on the Mac, used a sudo killall command and have now run out of black magic to try. Great screen, but would be nice to have a working webcam/integration to MacBook 13" 2020.

Is this confirmed? Are they both on the same OS? Big Sur?

I just got a good condition used Ultrafine 5K, the older A-B version, and have this exact same problem with my 2020 MBP 13" with 4 Thunderbolt Ports. Super frustrating, slow webcam performance. I'm currently still on Catalina. I want to go to Big Sur and M1 but we're in the middle of a big project and I can't easily risk downtime.

Happy 2021 everybody! This thread is the gift that keeps on giving. I can also confirm the M1 MacBook Air works with the LG UltraFine 27". I picked up the base model M1 (MacBook Air (M1, 2020), 8GB, Big Sur 11.2). Zoom and FaceTime are both fine. Auto brightness is unfortunately not working with the LG (never has on any Mac). Maybe Apple can add that in the M2 chip in a few more years. It's pretty wild that a $1k Mac that costs less than an iPhone can drive the 5K LG monitor in 2021.
