How to accomplish ordinary tasks with Apple Pencil instead of fingers?

I got an Apple Pencil and a Logitech keyboard for my new iPad Pro to avoid having a screen full of fingerprint smudges, but without a home button it seems that the iPad is very dependent on gestures with fingertips. If I tap or swipe on the scree with the pencil, it opens a new handwritten note. How can I unlock my iPad Pro with the pencil? What if I want to write a new note with the keyboard? How can I use the pencil to start a typed note, or to switch between typed and handwritten mode?

How can I call up the control panel with the pencil?

Well, I did find a way to unlock the iPad with the pencil, but it‘s not very convenient:

Prerequisite: Enable „Assistive Touch“ (in „Settings“ under „Accessibility“ - „Touch“)

When iPad is on standby:

  1. Remove pencil.
  2. Replace pencil.
  3. Remove it again.
  4. Tap on the Assistive Touch icon.
  5. In the Assistive Touch menu, tap on home.

Face ID unlocks the iPad and gives you the home screen.

Obviously, I would still be grateful for an easier way to do this.

The above also led me to a workaround for my last question:

The Assistive Touch menu can be customized to include an icon to call up the dock.
