i have a MacBook Air 2013, and want to add a dock so i can use additional monitors. i bought a universal Kensington 3.0 dock, and connected with a usb-a cable, and nothing. what do i need to do connection wise? seems like usb-a cord was the only choice, but it's not registering it.

you can try I, smc is a circuit that manages everything in the Mac fans, ports etc.. and its easy to reset
try to do that and in the worst case just contact apple and see what they tell you

Argh. Frustrating. Thanks for that article. Hadn’t seen it. Maybe the software will be updated and fix it.
But am I correct in thinking it should have worked with a usb-a cable? That’s seems to be only choice on that age of laptop.
