It seems I get some duplicate photos on my iPhone and MacBook Pro and in iCloud. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max, a MacBook Pro, which are running the latest OS. I want to know why I get duplicate photos and how to stop it. I must say, that what makes this so curious, is that not all photos are duplicated. Any help would be appreciated.

The majority of cases of duplicate photos we see here are explained by trying to use multiple sync tools across the same platforms (such as iCloud Photos plus manual cable import or AirDrop) or the like.
What can you tell us about your syncing habits?
Are there any obvious commonalities among the photos that get duplicated and those that don't? (Examples would be photos of a certain age, type, or origin.)
Do you tend to see at most two copies of a given photo, or more than two?
It is not so much that cable synching by itself causes the problem as that the combination of cable synching and iCloud Photos can cause a conflict that prevents one or the other system from detecting duplicates (or near duplicates) on import.
When we were in New Zealand, I didn't always have access to high speed internet or if we did, some of it was very slow wi-fi. On those occasions I would use a usb connection and connect my phone. Could photos make duplicates and sometimes triplicates of the photos? If that is the case, how do I prevent that from happening in the future?

Either stop using the cable syncing or iCloud Library. If you need the iCloud Library so that you can optimize storage on your iPhone then you'll have to stop using the cable syncing.
