In general, you need to connect with DisplayPort family to get higher refresh rates than 60 Hz.

"legacy" interfaces such as HDMI continue to supply the "heartbeat refresh" required for CRT displays, which sends the ENTIRE screen data, changed or not, every 60th second (IF it can keep up that rate). When using a very high resolution display, there is not enough cable bandwidth to maintain 60 Hz refresh and the rate may drop to 45 Hz or even 30 Hz.

DisplayPort family drops the 'heartbeat refresh' and uses a display with its own display buffer. Only the changes are sent across the link. When the display stops changing, the link goes nearly quiet. Really fast refresh rates (like 144Hz) are provided from the display's own internal buffer. The result -- no flickering.
