Gen1 AppleTV Remkte

I have a Gen1 AppleTV. I lost the remote when we moved. I got a new remote, it’s the small white one. I have followed the instructions to pair it. It is not responding to the Menu/Right 6-second Byron press. I can see it in my devices through the Remote app on my iPhone but I have to enter a 4-digit code of which it never prompts to enter on screen and even if I did, I don’t have a remote paired that I could do it with anyway. That is the whole purpose of this entire process.

The AppleTV doesn’t seem to respond to anything.

If you power it, then the status light should come on. If the status light shines continuously, then it is running as intended.

If the remote doesn’t respond, then unlink (Menu/Left) and link again (Menu/Right), as described.

If you intend to use it differently than intended (modified OS), then you’re on your own for support here.

But the ability to AirPlay is handy.

If you really have an Apple TV (1st generation), then be aware that this model never supported AirPlay. And you would need an old version of iTunes (v12.6 or earlier) to restore or sync content to the device externally through a computer.

If your Apple TV is a 4" black box, then it is at least 2nd generation.

I got it off eBay, it was new in the pckage yet although I understand it could have been repackaged. I replaced the battery immediately, first thing, figuring it had sat forever. Fortunately, it is a standard 2032 3v and had a new one in package from when I bought a 3-pack new. I have 1 PC that is older and will chew through a battery if left unplugged.

The AppleTV doesn’t seem to respond to anything. I’ve tried plugging a USB keyboard in, a Logitech wireless, a bootable USB stick with OpenELEC. Nothing. Won’t boot to USB, no response from keyboards, doesn’t even pop up the 4-digit code when I try to connect the Remote app.

Since it doesn’t seem to respond, I peeled the rubber off the bottom, removed the cover and took the cmos battery out thinking it would let go of time and date and whatever it holds in cmos or whatever Apple calls it. I’m stumped. If I had a PATA interface, I’d remove the hard drive and reformat it and try to reinstall the AppleTV software.

All I use it for is to stream music for my garage stereo since the Gen1 AppleTV has 2 RCA jacks yet. I’m not particular to the the OS so even if I could just get it to run something, I’d be happy. But the ability to AirPlay is handy.
