IPad PRo 12.9 2020 charging speed issue

Got my brand new iPad Pro 12.9 2020 on mid-April. On early May, the charging

speed becoming terribly slow or like not charging at all, about 1% per hour.

Took it to the Apple store. The tech said that might be an App is draining my

battery and ask me to factory restore the device. I factory restore the device

on the spot and it starts to charging fine. I took it home, did not install anything

on it due I doubt it is an App issue. I started to test the charging speed. I always

start to charge the device when the battery drains to around 40%. The charging

speed was inconsistent. Sometimes I got 40% per hour, sometimes I got 20%. Took

it back to Apple store again and the tech said will order a replacement for me.

I picked up my replacement yesterday (Please note a replacement is not a brand

new device, I only realized this after I picked up). Start to charge the device

again this morning and got 20% per hour. Took it back to the Apple again today.

Tech said is a charger issue and gave me a replacement charger. I tested right

away in the store, start to charge the device when it was on 46% of battery and

got 4% after 10 minutes which equal to 24% per hour. Still slow compare to what

I got before. Tech said this is the normal charging speed for a large device

like this. Could anyone PLEASE PLEASE help check their charging speed? How much

charge can you for exact one hour of charging time. Thank you in advance.

The charging algorithm is dynamic and driven by a number of factors - including initial battery charge level, temperature, CPU load and charging source.

The rate of charge is also non linear. From a “low” Initial charge level, the initial charging rate may be higher - until reaching ~80% when the charge rate will be reduced. If the iPad is relatively warm (either because of ambient temperature or CPU load), the iPad will charge more slowly that if it were cool and/or idle.

The rating of your Power Adapter (W) will also heavily influence the charging rate. A 5W Power Adapter will only charge very slowly, if at all. Most iPads require a 10-12W Power Adapter to charge at a reasonable rate; many older models will charge at the maximum possible rate with a 12W Power Adapter. Newer models, that support USB-PD Fast Charging, can use compatible 18W Power Adapters for the fastest “optimised” charging rate.

As such, given the factors at play, it is impossible to define a definitive charging behaviour for your iPad. That said, on the basis of your description, your observed charging behaviours don’t appear to be unusual.

I hope this information and reassurance proves to be helpful - and, in identifying the optimum charging conditions for your iPad, may resolve any issues that you have.

Thank you for your reply. As I mentioned. I have factory restored the device and did not install anything on it. So the CPU load was low. iPad Pro was cool and sitting at normal temperature. I always charged from around 40%, not the top or bottom. The iPad Pro 2020 comes with 18W charger. I wasn't expecting it would take 5 hours to fully charge the iPad Pro.
