the email and password are wrong for my apple id, how can i access it?

When the account was set up, it seems that the email was incorrect. This has resulted in when we try and reset the password to get into the Apple ID account it is impossible to check the email. We are trying to get the Apple ID onto a new iPhone but we cant access it so not sure what approach to take. And ideas?
