I have an older 2008 iMac with the following ports:
The iMac works just fine so no intention of replacing it. But I'd like to watch MP4 and DVD movies through the iMac onto my 2018 Panasonic TV which has HDMI ports and an Ethernet port. How do I go about connecting the iMac and TV to get good quality video and sound?

a mini-dvi to hdmi something like this
problem is that mini-dvi does not carry audio at all and many tv's may force active audio input to be that which it receive from the hdmi port
if the tv does not support choosing RCA or the likes connected to the macs audio 3.5mm minijack then you may need to rely on audio from the imac or from external speakers fed by the imacs 3.5mm minijack

Hi Rudegar. It took me some time but followed your advice and sourced a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor, connected the iMac video output to the TV and the iMac audio 3.5mm output to my stereo amplifier RCA inputs... and the result is just awesome! A 12 year old iMac and the performance is still just great. Thanks for your help.
Have you looked into An Apple TV? You don't necessarily need the latest version.
