Apple Pencil Gen 2 not connecting

Apple Pencil Gen 2 started showing 0% battery on iPad Pro 12” not 2020 model.. 2018(?). This started happening this morning randomly running iOS 13.5.1... after trying all the suggestions on Apple website, hard reset, disconnect, and attempt reconnect all I get now is it not being able to find it in Bluetooth settings. When I connect the pencil to the magnetic connection/ charging it pops up a grey oblong with Apple Pencil that’s flashes white on and off but doesn’t connect (see pic). Apple care suggested replacement but they can’t send a replacement with engraving on as per the one I have so hoping for a suggestion to fix on here first :)

Hello,

If Apple Pencil’s battery sits depleted for an extended amount of time then it will essentially ruin the battery preventing it from ever holding a charge which makes the Apple Pencil useless. Apple Pencil has a 1 year warranty (when purchased from Apple) which means that Apple will most likely replace it if the battery has failed.

Please refer to the following Apple Support document on how to troubleshoot Apple Pencil.

Whilst failure of the Apple Pencil battery is always a possibility, and often seized upon as the probable cause, your description would suggest that this is perhaps unlikely.

Here is one of the better troubleshooting guides for Apple Pencil:

https://appletoolbox.com/apple-pencil-not-working-heres-our-troubleshooting-guide/

If you have been offered a warranty exchange of your Pencil by Apple, you would be well advised to accept it. If the linked troubleshooting guide doesn’t lead to a solution, replacement of the Pencil will at least eliminate the Pencil itself from the equation. If a working Pencil is the objective, loss of the engraving should be the least of your concerns.

Side Note: Whilst product personalisation is often seen as an aesthetically attractive option, this can frequently limit the flexibility/options available to you in the event of a product return or exchange. If nothing else, product engraving can reduce resale or future trade-in values to near zero.

That is what I was thinking - maybe on the magnetic strip, since all other Bluetooth items had no problem connecting. After a few hours with support on the phone, reset to factory settings. That did not work, so they replaced the pencil.

Everything went haywire with the pencils after 13.5 IOS update, I had updated to 13.6, still did not work. Went to 14 Beta to see - not working. My worry is that if it a HW issue with the iPad - it will just kill or repeat this whole pattern.

we shall see. Got new pencil last night. It worked with iPad. Hopefully it will keep working.

Thanks .... but

-

a) it never really leaves the iPad’s magnetic strip other than for short periods whilst in use, therefore it has never become depleted until it started showing 0% over night - yesterday morning

b) Apple have agreed to replace but will not send an engraved one which to me isn’t like for like replacement thus my hope someone on the forums would be able to suggest something :)

Thanks for the suggestion but that’s pretty much what apple suggest and what I’ve already tried.

as stated Apple have offered a replacement but I thought first I’d try you guys on here for “home-fixes” in hope to save my engraving. This is personal choice and obviously prefer to have this on than worry about resale value, somethings are worth more :)

Had the same issue. Got the replacement pencil, and now, a week to the date - same issue with the same pencil. Just spent 70+ On the phone with Apple support while they basically did everything, including resetting iPad. Nothing worked. They suggested replacing pencil - but this was the replacement pencil. At wits end here. No appts at Genius Bar for a few weeks in my area. Anyone else find anything else that might work?

Quite right - it is the magnetic strip - I can see it now with the new pencil, since it had some charge when it got here. After it paired, the “lightning” symbol flashed on and off for a bit and then it just went away. Alas, it seems that it is not charging the pencils - so once their charge is gone, it will not pair to them as they basically need some charge.

$129 pencil. $1099 charger basically. As there is no other way to charge the second generation pencil. Unless someone knows of a different way to charge it, Apple support said there wasn’t.
